Sashiko is a Japanese embroidery that translates as ‘little stabs’. Traditionally, it was a decorative stitch used to mend and strengthen worn clothes.
In this two-and-a-half-hour workshop you will learn about the history of sashiko embroidery and stitch different patterns, while learning about their meaning. You will learn how to make the running stitch which forms the basis of sashiko as well as lots of embroidery tips.
You will be able to try a number of sashiko patterns, learning how to transfer and stitch the pattern. After completing the patterns, you will be able to use them to customise a fabric bag. In the workshop you will receive your own needle, threads, fabric and bag, which you will be able to take home to continue to explore this mindful embroidery.
No experience of embroidery is necessary and all equipment and materials will be provided.
Liz Taylor has always loved creating and making things from a young age in Australia, which has developed as she’s travelled the world teaching in primary schools. She started her business Sew Taylor Made Designs in 2019 and uses gorgeous Japanese fabrics to create bags and accessories. She has run workshops for the local WI and at the Tate RIBA North as part of the DOES takeover.
We keep workshops small at Florence and Fox so you can be sure of lots of one to one attention.
